Fall Of Efrafa [UK] †

Fall Of Efrafa was a crust band from Brighton, UK, we formed in 2006, and over the following four years we released three records, collectively known as "The Warren of Snares" - Owsla, Elil and Inlé. The concept was loosely based around the novel Watership Down by Richard Adams, addressing certain political and social issues that are discussed metaphorically within the book.

In the novel, Efrafa is a rabbit colony ruled by a dictator called General Woundwort, who oppresses rebellion through his elite police, the Owsla. In the context of the bands concept, Owsla represents the populace around which the story revolves, the Efrafa representing humanity. In the clutches of a theocratic dictatorship, their society is on the brink of collapse. With the encroachment of the Efrafa, an invasive species, this dictatorship turns to blind faith, obedience and punishment for answers. The story records the uprising by those who defy the word of rule and religion, culminating in not only the dethronement of their leader, but a futile charge against the Efrafa.

The trilogy is cyclical and runs in reverse; with Owsla representing the climax and eventual rebirth of the story. This is signified by a passage of cello which bookends the trilogy - representing the eventual rise and fall of empires and our inability to learn from past mistakes.

The band's first album, Owsla, came out in 2006, alternating D-beat emo crust, with the slow melancholic melody of post-rock, along with some post metal influences. The album title is a word in the Lapine language that in the novel corresponds to the elite warriors of the warren, who very often take advantage of their position by abusing their power over other rabbits. In the context of the record, the Owsla is a name bestowed upon all by their despotic leader, in a cynical move to give his people a false sense of empowerment. This record documents the final charge against the Efrafa.

The second album, Elil (in Lapine the language, meaning "enemy"), released the following year. The music moves through post rock/ post metal passages and a slower more brooding melodic crust, taking inspiration from doom metal. The concept continues with a view of the psychology of those within a society fighting religious oppression, both internal and external.

The last release, Inlé, came out in 2009. This record is predominantly slow, doom metal, to reflect the subject matter. The black cover and the album title, featuring Inlé, the black rabbit of death. The story begins with this record, a society on the brink of self-destruction, a maniacal ruler wielding theocratic ideology, oppressing and abusing, offering nothing in the face of a much greater threat, the encroachment of humanity upon their land.

The band ended once we had completed one final brief european tour, and we released a discography boxset called The Warren of Snares Trilogy, alongside a limited edition tour documentary DVD. Our last ever show was in Brighton, in december 2009.

Fall of Efrafa were an atmospheric crust band from Brighton, United Kingdom. Influenced by the novel “Watership Down” by Richard Adams, they created a trilogy of records collectively known as “the Warren of Snares” - Owsla, Elil and Inle. Over the course of these three records, they incorporated doom, post rock and post metal into their emotive crust punk, creating vast swathes of uplifting crescendos and dark abysses whilst telling the tale of an uprising against religious despots and the cruel hand of man.

Presented here is the entire original trilogy, held in a sturdy black embossed box, with brand new artwork for all three albums by band vocalist Alex. The collection also contains a lyric booklet, an enamel badge and two embroidered patches.

AA118. Fall Of Efrafa - Tharn LP

AA118. Fall Of Efrafa - Tharn LP

'Tharn' (meaning 'fear') is a single-track remix release of 'Dominion Theology' taken from their latest album 'Elil', but feels more like a teaser for new material from Brighton's Fall of Efrafa.

Paper Aeroplane, the remix masters at work here have turned what is a harsh and bleak track and infused it with piano, cello and a sense of post-rock pleasantries.

Their wording of this in release material as a 're-imagining' of the track, although a stomach-churning term, in this case is accurate.

Taking sections of guitar and sections of the relentless heaviness and turning it into almost a soundtrack-like piece of music is a great way to manipulate and show off FoE's grandeur in a way they had obviously not thought of before.

it was released on 300 one-sided LPs with a beautiful screen-printed b-side, this release is sold out since a super long time, which shows you how fast word travels on a fantastic band.

Big time instrumental emo (circa 1994-style) complete with piano and a cello to round out a well developed and executed piece of music. Gruff, yelled vocals make a brief appearance after a l...o...n...g calm and help usher things into more of a concerted song - yes, song, singular. The one songed, one-sided 12" has a beautifully screened B-side that does not play music. The side that does is comprised mostly of singular instruments slowly coalescing and ultimately reaching a crescendo of epic...ness. Dreary, emotional, and made for certain rainy nights alone, this is bringing me back to sad days in high school. Apparently known in some circles of heavyier music, FALL OF EFRAFA has taken a piece of music originally done by PAPER AEROPLANE and given it their personal touch of eloquence. For fans of GOSPEL, DROWNING WITH OUR ANCHORS, and MINERAL.

AA44. Fall Of Efrafa - Elil 2xLP/CD

the second instalment of The Warren of Snares trilogy from this fantastic band. To say the guys had moved on from their original sound is somewhat of an understatement. It was a bold musical change, as they had become such standard bearers of the UK/European crust punk ‘scene’ in such a short amount of time, via Owsla. Three mammoth 20+ minute tracks made up the record mixing their old sound with far more progressive metal & doom elements.

AA40. Fall Of Efrafa - Owsla LP/CD

Fucking hell, this is one of the best records I got my hands on lately! Hard hitting, yet melodic and epic crusty HCpunk with a Cello and throaty vocal style from Brighton UK. They really know how to create a desperate and aggressive athmosphere at the same time. This band delivers their music with a lot of variation in speed which makes the songs memorable and entertaining which is hardly the case nowadays. Lyrix based upon the book "Watership Down" – Awesome!
